Black Man Killed by Police While Entering Home in Columbus, OH

(CNN)The family of a Black man killed by police while entering his own home in Columbus, Ohio, last week, is asking for answers after the state’s criminal investigations bureau declined to look into the case due to a three-day delay in police calling for assistance.

Casey Goodson, 23, was fatally shot by a 17-year veteran of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, identified as deputy Jason Meade, working for the US Marshal’s fugitive task force looking for violent offenders Friday. The victim was not the person being sought by the US Marshal’s Task Force, Columbus Police said.

CNN reached out to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office for comment but has not yet heard back.

“At this point, witness testimony and physical evidence raise serious concerns about why Casey was even confronted, let alone why he was shot dead while entering his own home,” the family’s attorney, Sean Walton, told CNN.

Goodson had put his keys into his door before he was shot and fell into the kitchen, where his 5-year-old brother and his 72-year-old grandmother saw him lying on the ground with a Subway sandwich, Walton told CNN.

“Our demand is that the authorities provide the family with answers for Casey’s death and that the officer involved be held accountable. The family and the community demand swift justice for Casey Goodson.”

State agency won’t investigate

The Columbus Division of Police, which was not involved in the shooting, is investigating the incident.

Columbus Police announced Monday afternoon that the investigation into the fatal shooting had been turned over to the Ohio BCI at the request of Columbus Police Chief Thomas Quinlan.
But only an hour later BCI, the state agency that investigates police involved shootings, announced that they would not be able to accept the case.

“Golda Barton told CBS affiliate KUTV that she called police to request that a crisis intervention team transport her son, Linden Cameron, to a hospital for treatment as he was having a “mental breakdown.”

Barton said Linden has Asperger syndrome. She had just returned to work for the first time in nearly a year and said that her son suffers from separation anxiety.

Barton reportedly told officers that her son was unarmed, describing him as “a kid … trying to get attention, he doesn’t know how to regulate.”

She said she was told to stay put when officers arrived at her house. Within minutes, Barton said, she heard voices yelling, “Get down on the ground,” followed by several gunshots.

In a press briefing, Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Keith Horrocks said officers were called to the scene shortly after 10 p.m. to respond to a “violent psych issue” involving a juvenile who “had made threats to some folks with a weapon.”

Horrocks said there was no indication that the subject had a weapon, but stressed that the investigation was in its early stages.

Without using his name, Horrocks said that Linden, who is white, fled from the address on foot, and that one police officer fired at him during a “short foot pursuit.” Officers provided medical aid until Cameron was transported to a hospital, He is reported to be in serious condition.

Salt Lake City Cop Orders K-9 to Attack Unarmed Black Man

Salt Lake City cop is suspended after setting his K-9 dog on train engineer in ‘racially-motivated’ attack that may cost the victim his leg

Salt Lake City Police officer Nickolas Pearce has been been suspended pending investigation following outrage over a video where he’s heard encouraging a K-9 to attack a black man who was on his knees with his hands in the air.

The use of K-9s has also been suspended by Salt Lake City Police due to the April 24 incident where cops scrambled to the home of Jeffery Ryans, 36, and set the dog on him resulting in injuries so severe that his leg may be amputated.

Ryans filed his intent to sue on July 20 but police only begin investigating the incident on Tuesday when an interview with Ryans detailed his inspiration to speak out following the recent wave of Black Lives Matter protests.

“I felt like a chew toy,’ Ryans told the Salt Lake Tribune. ‘I didn’t know why this was happening to me. That’s what was going through my mind. Why?’

‘People need to know Black lives matter. Everybody matters, but you can’t just treat people differently because of their religion or their skin color,’ Ryans said. ‘I developed myself to get to where I’m at right now. I should have the same respect as others. We don’t get it.’

It was only this week that cop has been suspended. Nickolas Pearce’s K-9 Unit won Unit of the Year in 2011 for its outstanding work. However just nine days earlier Pearce was involved in a use of deadly force incident where another officer shot a minor driving a stolen car several times.

The other officer who fired eight shots at the minor’s car was found to have used deadly force unnecessarily.

OPINION: This story is a prime example of why laws need to be changed so cops can be sued and held PERSONALLY liable.
